Edinburgh Computing and Social Responsibility Meeting
TECHNOLOGY & GOVERNMENT
Helen Lowe
Monday August 24th 1992
In trying to steer the fruits of our labours away from
military usage (say) and into more socially useful applications,
we come up against external constraints: whether governmental, or
more subtle societal controls. We need to analyse how these
forces work if we are to try to influence them - but are they, in
turn, subject to "technological determinism"?
I shall probably attempt to span three periods:
Prehistory (Labour Governments, Lucas Aerospace); the Middle Ages
(the Cold War period); and the Modern Day (current developments);
and maybe discuss assertions such as: "Technological complexity
and public accountability stand in an approximate inverse
relationship".
The meeting will be held in the Coffee Room (G1) in 80
South Bridge on Monday August 24th from 12.30-1.30pm. Feel free
to bring your lunch with you. Free tea, coffee and biscuits will
be provided. All are welcome to attend.
The next meeting is:
Monday 14th Sept, Alan Bundy, The New Software Copyright Law
