The BBC TV said last night that 'the nationalists' would vote against
the government in the european debate on Wednesday.

Does this mean we can forget about 'independence in Europe'?,
or has the BBC got it wrong?

I was under the impression that the vote on Wednesday was about a
particular government bill, not the principle of greater European
unity. If, for example, you disagreed with the government's opting out
of various social provisions, then it seems to me that you'd have to
vote against. Otherwise you concede to the Tory party the right to
define the only possible terms under which Britain can accept the
treaty.

I think this is because that this debate also serves as a motion of confidence
in the current government - a heavy defeat could signal the possibility of
an election, so you can't really blame the opposition parties for taking this
chance...

No-one has confidence in the government, but I can't see them calling an
election unless they have to. On the other hand it will be a fantastic
victory for the looney-right of the conservative party. Pretty amazing
when 40 or so Militant MP's can threaten to overturn a bill that is
broadly supported by about 500 of 650 MPs. I'm not too sure what John
Smith hopes to get out of it.

Speak for yourself.

If we persue your analogy, what I was thinking of was more along the lines
of not accepting damaged goods. Is this specific bill the only loaf on
the shelf then? You sure there aren't any under the counter? They're not
capable of baking any others?
