It's hot and sticky, here! And not only that, the weather in Europe
is miserable. I believe in Global Warming, now.

Frankly, this country's going down the tubes, and I don't mean The hot
and stuffy crowds on the London Underground. I miss Santa Cruz. If I
don't get home soon, I'll sound just like johnmann...

At least it's interesting talking to the cab drivers, here. One told
me all about the Russian diplomat he drove around, who laughed at the
EU's stupidity for letting in so many poor little countries,
predicting economic stagnation for Europe, if not actual collapse. Or
the head of a county state health authority telling about the 90% of
African immigrants who are HIV+ and had used up over 200% of her AIDS
treatment budget in just the first few months of the year. Then he
went on to tell me his personal tale of woe about the public
healthcare system; terribly depressing.

Apparently the issue is "asylum seekers", a very hot topic; we
have "undocumented workers" and here they have "asylum seekers".
Apparently, if you say anything about the problems associated with the
situation, you run the risk of being labelled racist. Sound familiar?

Maybe when I get home and over my jet lag (Please, God?) I'll post
about my U.S. vs. Greek Toilet Theory on why the Bush administration
miscalculated the real risk posed by Saddam Hussein. But that's more
of a Greek-based epiphany, and I'm way too tired to go into it now.

Feh. The Frogs were dropping like flies a year or two ago
during a summer that wouldn't even qualify as mildly warm
in most of the U.S. And I remember some British friends
of mine screeching about how they were all gonna DHIE about
a decade ago because the summer temperature in their green
and pleasant land had risen above 70F. They oughta spend
a few August days in Phoenix, I recall thinking.

Good! That would serve the arrogant bastards right. Let's
keep our fingers crossed. Fuck 'em, and the Airbuses they
flew in on.

AIDS was developed in a secret CIA lab to kill off de black man,
dontcha know. Or was that crack cocaine? It's so hard to keep
up with these victimhood/conspiracy theories...

And that's what we can look forward to here, if HillaryCare ever
comes to fruition. What a thought: medical services run like the
Department Of Motor Vehicles.

Oh, yes. And in candid moments, some Europeons will admit to
harboring misgivings about allowing all those Mohammedans in.
Can you say "fifth column," boyzengirls? We're edging inexorably
toward a clash of civilizations that was only postponed, not
called off, by the end of the Crusades. And when the tabbouleh
hits the fan, the scene in Yurrup isn't going to be pretty.

Sorry to hear you got bumped by BA - it wouldn't have happened if you'd
listened to me and flown Virgin. If you're flying back tomorrow (Sat)
you may well run into the Little Pirate at Heathrow as he's on the
Virgin flight - we might even all run into each other at SFO. Need a
ride home ?

Bon voyage,

Right. Let me try to explain. Folks, there is this thing called humidity.
It exists every where except in places like deserts. California (mostly)
is a desert. Even in places like the bay area. Did you notice how it
doesn't rain for something like 6 months at a time? That's a clue.

Britain has been going doewn the tubes since the Atlee
government. Socialism is a great leveller, It brings everything
down a level or two.

That being said, I like London. I lived there for a
couple of years.

Yup, the Barbarians are at the gate.

Much of the UK irony being, the immigrants come from
countries that wanted the Brits out of their home land - Feelthy
Steenking Imperialists. So, the Brits leave, things get really
corrupt and really bad, so the locals up stakes and head off to
the home of the Imperialists.

Actually, we were planning on having a whip around to see
if we could send him home early.

Having recently returned from a tour of the Midwest, including Nebraska
and Iowa, sticky doesn't even begin to describe Midwestern weather in the
summer. Besides, the Brits don't have TORNADOS, do they?

Well, I suppose some in Santa Cruz will be overwhelmed with emotion when
they discover how close Hillary is to sitting in the President's chair and
thus controlling Health Care in this country. Hillary will unquestionably
hitch up her knickers and make asylum-seekers feel right at home in our
country.

Please next time don't call collect. Auntie Em has been having trouble
paying her phone bill since The Shrub cut off her Medicaid co-payments for
prescriptions. She finally had to sell the Porsche to buy Unca Bert some
more Viagra.

The family I visited there has been affected in the following ways by
the British system:

1. Oldest brother died a few years ago (at age 47) due to pneumonia,
contracted in hospital while being treated for something else.
(Nosocomial infection due to miserably uneducated and undertrained
third world hospital staff resulting in filthy hospital conditions.)

2. Friend, roughly my age, breast cancer victim, received no surgical
treatment for her cancer as it went undiagnosed for too long and had
spread. Is currently recovering from radiation treatment to the
breast (we're talking open sores, people), chemo, and is on
maintenance meds with fingers crossed.

3. Friend's now 4 y.o. niece went completely deaf a couple of years
ago due to inner ear infections and was undiagnosed despite her mom's
insistence that her child was deaf until they private paid for an ENT
to give her a hearing test...

And while we're at it...

4. Friend's son, of average intelligence, was undiagnosed for
learning disorders, is now unemployed, uneducated and has no further
options. State funded programs for apprenticeships have been
discontinued, and the few school-based occupational training programs
can't find teachers to work for the low pay.

~Queenie

P.S. The taxi driver told of visiting his brother who was in the
hospital for a brain operation. He said there was a man in the next
bed for a similar operation, from Bosnia. The Bosnian spoke no
English so every time the doctors wanted to communicate with him, they
would call Bosnia, get his daughter on the line to translate. The
public picks up the phone bills as well as the hospital bill.

Too late now. But I may fly Virgin next time (despite their somewhat
rude advertizments) just to say I did *something* Virgin. (It's been
a while.)

The point is, Mr. Smartypants, that London isn't usually that hot!
But they're starting to get a lot of heatwaves, so they better get a
clue, because it's only going to get worse. I thought the Greeks were
bad, but I found more air-conditioning in Greece (ok, nevermind that
the electricity crashed for a full day the week before, all over
Greece, due to the quickly growing demand for power, the lack of
infrastructure, and all the A/C units that went on during a heatwave)
than in London. I was in a five-star hotel in the city, the Radisson
Mayfair Hotel, and the room had an "air-cooler". It was woefully
inadequate, and we couldn't open the windows, even to throw ourselves
out. They say they have airconditioning, but we were stifling all
night long, even after calling the hotel 'engineer'.

Ahh, you should have gone to Birmingham, it's beautiful there, loads
of architectural stuff, clean air and uncongested roads. :-)

Things are all fucked up, anyway. I'm starting to feel the malaise
resulting from pessimism that can only end badly. At least if he pays
taxes here, I can refill my Prozac scrip on his dime after Hillary's
elected.

Last I heard most of my taxes were being used to buy depleted uranium
bullets for American soldiers to fire at Iraqi children.

This is just horrible. Regular bullets are much more cost efficient.

[idly scratching my head] I thought we were supposed to be saving up the
pig fat for Da Shrub when he overwhelmingly wins the Republican
nomination for President.
