Supposing the Niners and the Giants front office had a little
conversation, see. About what a glory it would be to local advertisers
to have Deion in the neighborhood, year round. Good for baseball, good
for football, and good for the boys who buy the big seats high up.

We're hemmed in, say the Niners. Salary cap. Oh, that's too bad, say
the Giants. Oh, hey, you know the cost of turf, and the moving of the
stands, and how football fills the place up with more rowdies, and I
think maybe a direct payment of five million out front would settle all
that. Oh, and, hey, we're good friends with Deion, I think his agent
will be especially receptive to your concerns, what with that rookie
who's dreamin' big and the inside lineman ain't reported yet.

So the Niners settle a hefty claim to the Giants for use and abuse of
Candlestick, if you can imagine, and then a very generous offer to a
journeyman centerfielder comes down from the Giants, and everybody
happy. Prime Time settles in the Bay Area, the Niners have coins for
maybe even a practice squad, and the Giants have what they seem to
appreciate more than wins - cash.

What could possibly be wrong with that? Especially if only what counts
against the cap is reported?

If there was even a hint of that, the Cowboys, Dolphins and various
other teams pursuing Deion would cry foul. The 49er players were joking
about such an arrangement too.

It could mean more money to Deion if such sponsors as Nike were to
exploit his being a member of such glamourous teams (well, at least the
49ers anyway). Sega supposedly offered him more money on his
endorsement deal with them if he stayed with the Niners. But his first
comments after the trade didn't reflect these possibilities. All he
talked about was retiring from one sport. Whether this talk was
dissappointment from going from a contender to a sub-.500 team and/or
posturing to get more lucrative contracts in both sports and/or somehow
feeling that his NFL options have become more limited is hard to say.
