"Alt" originally meant alternative, but these days, it just signifies the worldwide hierarchy with relaxed rules. comp.* and the other big-7 hierarchies have much stricter newsgroup creation rules, so it's not uncommon for small technical groups to start off in alt.*. Only when the demand rises do they try for a comp.*. In fact, there are already three newsgroups in the alt.dcom.* hierarchy, one of which is fairly active. :) -- Mordechai T.
