I thought Newport Beach was up LA way... Is there another one >south of the border? He meant Porto Nuevo (which in Gringo-speak is New Port), which is about ten miles south of Rosarito Beach on the Rosarito to Ensenada highway. It used to be a decent place to go to get cheap Lobster (fried in lard) with rice, beans and tortillas. Over the last ten years Porto Nuevo has become incredibly commercialized, and the prices for lobster not significantly better than here in the States. Newport Annies in Pacific Beach does a reasonable immitation of Porto Nuevo style lobster, at about the same price as the places in Porto Nuevo. The one thing Newport Annies doesn't have are the Moby Lobsters (you know, those $40 a pop ones), which are still a good deal in Porto Nuevo (when the obnoxious waiters will sell them to you...). As for Mexican Seafood takeout, I much prefer Fins in Mira Mesa over any Rubio's (avoid their Carnitas). Another place worth mentioning is Bahia on El Cajon Blvd (near Park), their lobster burritos are really good, and they make decent Carnitas and Carne Asada as well. Their Shrimp burritos are very variable, from very good to very bad (heavy Iodine taste). Mike Christensen
