Went to the new (a month old or so) restaurant/bar at UTC called Hops. It was OK, although I think slightly expensive for the food qaulity and service. It was kind of a cross between a swanky bar and posh restaurant, so the atmosphere was unusual. Both the kick your shoes off scene you'd expect at a bar, and the intimacy of an expensive restaurant were indeed lacking. Anyone else have comments? Tom Marvan

I found Hops to be a very good micro-brewery i.e. their beer was very tasty but they seem to be trying too hard for a "yuppie" atmosphere. For the prices of there main menu you'd expect a classier place, like you said their fine dining was a little lacking. But still, I recommend trying their brews. And if you live close by I also recommend that you invest in the 1/2 gallon take-home jug of the home brew of your choice. Each return trip you can get a refill for a mere $5.00. I had the "flash-fried cajun shrimp" twice: the first time it was perfectly done, the second time their flash must have been stuck, since the shrimp had the consistency of a bike tire. ($7 for the shrimp as I recall--it's an "appetizer"). The tortilla soup ($4?) was hardly worthy of the name. Really just a chicken soup with tortilla chips thrown into it (I recommend the tortilla soup at Guadalajara Grill instead). The hamburger (mine had asiago cheese on it) was pricey but good. I'd recommend going to Rory's or Paul's Place instead. -- ken@bnf.com "They're only trying to tell you lies --XII possibly Trying to make you compromise writing about To leave reality completely up to them" Clinton/Gore

It is more expensive than the typical brew-pub, but you do not have to spend alot. Their pizza's are good and under $10. The appetizers are also large and you can make a meal of one or two of them. However, like most brew-pubs you do not go there for the food but to sample their brew. My wife has been there a couple of times and likes the unfiltered wheat beer. My first time last night, I tried the wheat beer and their rasberry beer. Yes, rasberry beer! They throw some rasberries into the beer at some time in the process. With a litle residual sugar content, it has a fruity taste, not for the die-hard bitter drinker, but good for a change. The wheat beer is very Bavarian, and I recommend it. Some of my wife's freinds like the five samples that they put together for $5.50. A little larger than the usual samplers. Hops, is a high end brew-pub trying to be a little too trendy, but I must confess I liked the modern atmosphere and the service was excellent. San Diego is rapidly getting quite a selection of brew-pubs. I have tried three of them, and I would like to hear other opinions. !Keith L.
