It even has a name: These women have a medical title and explication: "Stockholm Syndrome." This is a situation in which those who are intimidated, controlled, or made to suffer, begin to love, admire, and even sometimes sexually desire their ontrollers or captors.

There seems to be, as well, a connection with the experience of violence in childhood. It seems that children who are raised in violent households tend to a much greater extent than normal to either attatch themselves to violent individuals, become violent individuals, or both (depending on context). Since children cannot allow themselves to believe that they are not loved (=death), whatever they are getting, for good or ill, is necessarily love. In this kind of logic even the most violent abuse is love. When these kids grow up, lacking better models, the same logic applies. Which is why 99% of battered women stay with or return to or recreate relationships with their perpetrators: take away the violence and you take away their love, and they'll kill you for it. this remains true even if they *know* better, because the principle has been ingrained at a pre-logical level. This is a pattern that I have seen in many permutations wherever I have gone. Tragic.
