       PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT ***********************************

                                SAN DIEGO
                           SUN LOCAL USER GROUP

                 INTERNET ACCESS AND INFORMATION SERVICES

                   Technical Presentation/Demonstration

                       Tuesday, November 10th, 6:30PM
                      San Diego Supercomputer Center

       TOPICS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

The Internet is a loosely governed amalgam of networks offering
global data access and communication. At the next meeting of
the SDSLUG, we'll be investigating some of the new tools for
accessing information from data services and research
institutions across the Internet. Corporate users may also find
the discussion valuable in establishing corporate-wide data
       services within their organization.

       Topics will include:

       WAIS and Gopher:
Two new protocols and associated tools for getting infor-
mation when you don't know where it is or in what format.

       Search-It:
	 SunSoft's new full-text search-and-retrieval application for
the Solaris software environment. This new application acts as
a personal reference librarian that quickly and easily locates
on-line business data such as reports, proposals, and
correspondence stored anywhere on the corporate network. In
addition, SearchIt enables users to manage and manipulate this
information for their specific needs through its easy-to-use
       intuitive interface.

       ARCHIE:
         An interactive Internet Archive librarian.

       MELVYL:
The University of California's Library Catalog service.

       Commercial Services:
We'll have material available from a wide variety of
commercial data services accessible over the Internet, along
with information from commercial providers of Internet access
       in San Diego.

And finally, November 10th is the day that Sun will be
announcing new products! Sun will be here to talk about their
       latest offerings.

       DIRECTIONS

Take Interstate 5 to the Genesee avenue exit in San Diego.
Travel West on Genesee to the North Torrey Pines/Northview
Drive stop light. Turn left Northview Drive and head South
into the UCSD campus. At the stop sign turn left onto John
Jay Hopkins Drive. Follow the road around to the South and
look for the San Diego Supercomputer Center. It is the
large white building on your right with the satellite dish
on the roof. Continue up the driveway past the
Supercomputer Center. Park in any non-reserved space in the
SDSC parking lot overlooking the Center. Follow the path and
steps through the lawn to the first floor (lobby). The
meeting will be held in the SDSC auditorium.

       PARKING

A three dollar fee ($3.00) will be charged by UCSD for
evening parking, unless you already have a UCSD parking
       permit.

       NOTE

You do not need to be a member of any group or organization
to attend this meeting. It is open to anyone interested in a
