SAN DIEGO SUPERCOMPUTER CENTER
SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT
****************************************************************************
TOPIC: The Future of Parallel Processing - An Assessment
SPEAKER: John Van Zandt
WHEN: Tuesday, November 24th, 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: SDSC Auditorium
ABSTRACT:
Parallel processing has been around for about 30 years. During that time
many attempts have been made to bring it into the mainstream of computers,
but none can be truly called successful. This talk will look at the lessons
that the parallel processing industry has learned and discuss the challenges
that lay ahead as the industry moves rapidly toward achieving a sustained
teraflop computer system.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. John Van Zandt has spent over 12 years designing and applying
high-performance computer systems for strategic scientific and commercial
applications. He is currently the Director of Advanced Technology
for Unisys. He has also been the Director of Future Systems at Sequent
Computer Systems, one of the pioneering companies in parallel processing.
Prior to that he was the Engineering Manager at Intel Scientific Computers,
another leader in parallel processing.
Dr. Van Zandt was the chief architect of the Loral Data Flow computer,
one of the first commercially available parallel computers. He is the
author of many papers on parallel processing, lectures widely, was an
invited speaker at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories' 40th
anniversary seminar on the future of computing, and has consulted for
several organizations including FDSI and Price Waterhouse. His recent
book, "Parallel Processing in Information Systems", has received
excellent reviews as an easy to understand guide to parallel processing
technology and how it applies to commercial information systems.
Dr. Van Zandt received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D in computer science
from the University of California, San Diego in 1976, 1979, and 1986,
respectively. He has taught graduate courses in computer architecture
at the University of California, San Diego, and at Drexel University.
