PRESENCE AND TELEPRESENCE:
The Virtual Reality Approach to Design
UCSD Extension -- One Day Seminar
February 5, 1993
University of California, San Diego
#################################################################
This one-day course presents the virtual reality (VR) approach to
designing computer systems. Following an introduction to the
concepts of presence and telepresence, the course discusses VR
hardware components and their uses. Instruction continues with
demonstrations and discussions of VR applications, concluding
with an introduction to the software design techniques and tools
available for implementing virtual realities. Students examine
how these design techniques can be employed, even in systems us-
ing only common computer hardware. The course is oriented toward
practicing computer programmers interested in how virtual reality
systems are designed and constructed. Note: no visitors permit-
ted.

Phil Mercurio has been a staff programmer/analyst for four years
at the San Diego Supercomputer Center's Advanced Scientific Visu-
alization Lab, specializing in interactive computer graphics.
His responsibilities include the assessment of virtual reality
systems and the implementation of a shared virtual reality sys-
tem. He was employed previously by FTL Games, where wrote the
Amiga version of the game DungeonMaster. He has also worked in
two UCSD labs; in the Quantitative Morphology Lab, working as
systems manager on computer graphics of neuroanatomical struc-
tures; and in the Cognitive Science Lab, studying human-machine
interfaces. In addition, Mr. Mercurio maintains a consulting
practice, with such clients as GTI Graphics Division, Rockwell,
Boeing, Hughes, Scripps Research, S-Cubed, and Angel Studios.
