VIDEO SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES
FOR COMPUTER GRAPHICS ANIMATION
A UCSD Extension Course
University of California, San Diego
#################################################################
This ten-week course will cover the equipment and techniques re-
quired to do computer graphics animation to video tape. Partici-
pants will learn the technical basics necessary to design and use
a computer graphics animation facility, as well as learn computer
graphics tips and techniques for recording to video. Topics in-
clude video signals and technical terminology; system configura-
tions, including an overview of the latest equipment, choice of
formats and media, and equipment requirements for both consumer
and professional facilities; and production and post-production,
including recording tips, aesthetics, strategies, and techniques
for getting the highest quality from your images. Most materials
will be provided. Equipment demonstrations and hands-on oppor-
tunities augment the course.

Kevin Landel is Head Engineer and Technical Director of the media
production facilities at the San Diego Supercomputer Center,
where he defined, designed and installed the audio and video fa-
cilities for the Center's Advanced Scientific Visualization La-
boratory, and now supervises and contributes to the production of
the Vislab's computer graphics animations. He received his Mas-
ters Degree in 1988 from the Media Laboratory at the Mas-
sachusetts Institute of Technology, where he specialized in
psychoacoustics and its applications to speech recognition sys-
tems and interfaces. He received his BS/EECS from the University
of California at Berkeley, with an emphasis on computer architec-
ture and system interface design. Before coming to SDSC, Mr.
Landel worked as a system design engineer at Amdahl Corporation,
a mainframe computer manufacturer. He has worked as a crew
member on the production of several movies, and has traveled to
South America to shoot a documentary on the lifestyles of the
rural people of Ecuador and Bolivia.
