UCSD Extension -- One Day Seminar
Volume Visualization:
Creating Images from Three-dimensional Scientific Data
January 29, 1993
University of California, San Diego
This course will focus primarily on volume visualization,
the imaging of three-dimensional data sets, a powerful tech-
nique for gaining insight into both acquired and computed
scientific data. The technique has become very popular in
such fields as medicine, physics, mathematics, molecular
science, and geoscience, and is indispensable for analyzing
computational results. The seminar begins with an introduc-
tion to volume visualization, followed by in-depth discus-
sion of foundation algorithms and fundamental concepts.
Students progress to a rigorous introduction to advanced
algorithms and optimizations. The course approaches the sub-
ject from a data-domain standpoint so that students can
immediately apply learned techniques to their own data.
Students also discuss examples, applications, commercial and
public domain software, volume visualization futures, and
pointers to further information. On-line demonstrations and
hands-on training is also included. Previous exposure to
computer graphics techniques is useful but not required.
Note: No visitors permitted.
T. Todd Elvins is an associate staff visualization program-
mer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, one of four
National Science Foundation supercomputer centers in the
U.S. He works with software engineers and animators who
research new computer graphics techniques and has been
involved in the design and implementation of the SDSC
Advanced Scientific Visualization Laboratory. Previously
Elvins worked at Culler Scientific Systems in Santa Barbara,
where he developed system software for a minisupercomputer
project. Mr. Elvins has published numerous papers and has
spoken in many courses on the subject of scientific visuali-
zation. He has taught several tutorials on visualization
for Eurographics in the United Kingdom, and has given
invited visualization talks in Russia, Brazil, Venezuela,
and Austria. Elvins chaired the 1990 ACM San Diego Workshop
on Volume Visualization. He can be reached at (619) 534-
5128 to answer questions about the course.
