I hope you are kidding Mark. I have this picture in my mind of what the
net would be like if the whole net were to adopt this attitude, world
wide, in the comp, rec, news, talk, and soc groups. The 'alt' hierarchy
would become a cancer that would overwhelm the net.
No, I have to disagree with you. Discussion and polls in new group
creation are critical in maintaining some semblance of order outside
of the alt hierarchy. Since there is no central authority in Usenet,
the only tool we have to maintain this order is peer pressure.
I personally think Kimbro.com is way out of line. I resent having the
seattle.forsale newsgroup created, as there is now another newsgroup I
have to scan. Seattle.general is so low traffic that after my kill
file is done processing there is usually only one screen full of subject
headings to select from. *personally* I don't think it is worth it, and
haven't subscribed to the new group. Anything I have for sale will get
posted to seattle.general. Had there been a discussion on this, I might
have been swayed by general opinion. Since the attitude seems to be
"Well, anybody can do anything they want, and we will vote with our
sys files", then I will vote with my sys file to not propagate seattle.forsale.
Likewise, there is no reason to have a separate seattle.admin group, so
I will crosspost anything I put in seattle.admin over to seattle.general.
