Discussion and polls in new group : creation are critical in maintaining some semblance of order outside : of the alt hierarchy. Since there is no central authority in Usenet, : the only tool we have to maintain this order is peer pressure. As I see it, it's a disagreement between two philosphies of news administrations, "descriptive", ie. "this is what happens" and "prescriptive", ie. "this is how it should be". Along with this is inclusive/exclusive creation. Should a group that has a reasonable number of readers and managable volume exist, even if its pedigree is a bit suspect? [ Get an all/all feed from eskimo and see how much stuff exists that isn't offically sanctioned. ;-) ] For creating (what should be) a local group, I think setting up some sort of rigid rule base, like in the big 7 hierarchies is just getting your knickers in a twist. A consensus by the readership of seattle.admin isn't going to be drastically different the the results of a vote. The volume of traffic doesn't seem to justify the effort. Even voting by rmgroup (among the limited number of systems in western Washington) wouldn't be fatal ;-) . : I personally think Kimbro.com is way out of line. From my point of view, Kimbro.com wasn't the creator. Judging from this system's junk directory, seattle.forsale has existed for weeks or months. I assume a result of the last time a more rational seattle.* organization was discussed. : I resent having the seattle.forsale newsgroup created, as there : is now another newsgroup I have to scan. Only if you want to buy something. I'll be glad not to see that traffic. Mark Zenier markz@ssc.wa.com
