Positions available in the PolyMath Development Group The PolyMath Development Group (PDG), a group specializing in research into network systems engineering for technical users, expects to hire a wide range of personnel in the next few months. Interested applicants are invited to send CVs to the Director of PolyMath, at warp@polymath.cecm.sfu.ca. We expect to have the following positions available: Title: Collaborative Network Support Programmer Type: Junior Programmer Time: to be negotiated Description: The programmer will support the work of the PDG in developing novel applications of collaborative technology in the high-performance networking environment. They will help construct new Java-based tools for use by members of the Centre for Experimental and Constructive Mathematics, and commercial-quality OpenMath tools. Experience Needed: UNIX system skills, especially with Solaris. Object-oriented programming and source management. Experience Preferred: Java programming, network programming (TCP/IP, UDP/IP, ATM), Mathematical Sciences, Artificial Intelligence. Title: High-performance Network Support Programmer/Manager Type: Junior Programmer Time: to be negotiated Description: The programmer/manager will support the work of the PDG with Canada's High Performance Computing Network in development of systems for allocating and using supercomputer resources in Canada. Experience Needed: UNIX system skills, especially with Solaris. Object-oriented programming and source management. Experience Preferred: Java programming, network programming (TCP/IP, UDP/IP, ATM), Mathematical Sciences. The PolyMath Development Group PDG has developed many new technologies, especially using the Java language. These technologies include work in the emerging OpenMath standard for scientific and engineering communication. PDG is a founding member of the North American OpenMath Initiative. The group has recently set up PolyLAB, a state-of-the-art network communication facility, with equipment donated by Sun Microsystems. PDG expects to use this facility for innovative network tools, including the investigation of space-based networking systems. Such systems require special network protocols. PolyLAB's facilities include two large multiprocessor servers, Sun Workstations, and new-generation JavaStations. PDG development team members take responsiblity for maintaining the broadband network connection between the (two) parts of the lab, as well as any potential interface to satellite and wireless communication facilities. Programming responsibilities will include participating in development of distributed computing and collaboration systems, online mathematical computational tools, and latency-adaptive network protocols for communication with global networking and remote sensing systems in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), and higher ranges (Lunar systems, L-1 systems). We would like to hire people who would be interested in being involved in exciting new areas of technology.
