Mac OS X Beta is available at Apple Singapore Store (http://www.apple.com/singaporestore) now for order at S$53.00 plus GST. (for Singapore users) Before you go out and order one to install on your Mac, check that your PowerMac is supported and more importantly, according to macrumors.com, Mac OS X Beta has an expiration date of 15 May 2001. After that date, you'll need the retail Mac OS X CD to boot up your Mac and gain access to your harddisk. (http://www.macrumors.com/article.php3?sid=20000913060311&ms=1) So if you buy the beta now, you pretty much have to buy the official release to continue using Mac OS X on your PowerMac. Be forewarned.

You're overstating the case. The Apple document referred to in that
article makes it clear that although the MacOS X beta will stop working,
you can use *any other* bootable CD to start up from, for example the
MacOS 8 or 9 or whatever system you've already got. Then use startup
disk or whatever to continue using your classic MacOS installation.
Also, although I have no proof of this, I very much doubt that there
will be anything stopping you from booting your other operating system
by holding down option at startup (to choose the boot partition) after
that date.

Of course you will! What did you expect? You want Apple to give away
their next-gen operating system for free? Why is it surprising that you
will need to buy MacOS X if you want to run MacOS X?
And if you *don't* buy the beta now, you'll still have to buy the
official release if you want to run it when it comes out!
And if you *do* but the beta and you don't like it, there's *nothing* to
stop you from using your classic operating system on your Powermac
before or after 15 May next year.

And check that you have at least 128 megabytes of RAM installed the amount mentioned in today's ZDNet News article. it certainly makes me think about how long I will hold to my IMac which I have already upgraded to 92 meg > From: OlosSaw <nobody@nowhere.com> > Organization: SCV Cablemodem News site > Newsgroups: > sg.comp.mac,uk.comp.sys.mac,alt.sys.mac.newuser-help,aus.computers.mac > Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 23:48:13 +0800 > Subject: Mac OS X Beta - Warning! > > Mac OS X Beta is available at Apple Singapore Store > (http://www.apple.com/singaporestore) now for order at S$53.00 plus GST. > (for Singapore users) > > Before you go out and order one to install on your Mac, check that your > PowerMac is supported and more importantly, according to macrumors.com, Mac > OS X Beta has an expiration date of 15 May 2001. Only worse, because the first time you are effectively a guinea pig for Apple's benefit (although it wouldn't be so bad *if* the beta fee is deducted off the full release fee which is presumably higher). In any case, why charge if there's a definite expiry date on the beta? DarkHorse (If I've completely missed the point.. well y'know, it IS late)

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple provides a series of beta version up to the golden release. I suspect that the $55 we pay has covered the costs for a few updates. Afterall, this is beta 1. If Apple is really good, we might get a discount on the final version... ;) -- Weiyun [Remove the obvious for email replies]
