EIGHTY BONUS APPLICATIONS WITH OS/2 WARP 4
Application Sampler CD-ROM and BonusPak Provide Customer Solutions
Right Out of the Box
AUSTIN, Texas, September 3, 1996...IBM today announced plans to distribute
an Application Sampler CD-ROM and a BonusPak of applications with OS/2 Warp*
4. This comprehensive set of business, personal productivity, security,
utility, and educational and reference applications are designed to exploit
the features in OS/2, and give customers immediate software solutions.
"The inclusion of the the Application Sampler CD-ROM and BonusPak with
OS/2 Warp 4 will give users full productivity tools right out of the box,"
said Jeff Howard, IBM worldwide OS/2 brand manager. "Users will be able to
experience OS/2 Warp's powerful new features that will make it the standard
for future operating system solutions."
Test Drive Popular Applications
The Application Sampler CD-ROM will include trial or mini- versions of
more than 70 native OS/2 software applications. Included on the CD-ROM is a
trial version of StarDivision's StarOffice 3.1. StarOffice is a suite of
office productivity applications containing StarWriter word processor,
StarCalc spreadsheet, StarDraw graphics and presentation package, StarGallery
multimedia tool, StarImage image manipulation and StarChart chart and table
creator. StarOffice seamlessly integrates World Wide Web functionality such
as Web browsing, and effectively manages hyperlinks and Web publishing using
the latest HTML standard and HTTP and FTP protocols.
"StarOffice is a complete Internet-enabled office suite available for
OS/2," said Marco Borries, president and CEO of StarDivision GmbH, Germany.
"By including StarOffice in the Application Sampler, users of OS/2 Warp 4 will
have an opportunity to experience an ideal business suite solution when
working in a network computing environment."
Also included on the Application Sampler CD-ROM is MGI PhotoSuite for
OS/2, a digital imaging and multimedia software package, which was ported to
OS/2 using IBM's Open32 technology. PhotoSuite allows users to easily
capture, display, convert, edit, catalog and print photo images, video and
sound in almost any digital format, whether on a hard disk, CD-ROM, or the
Internet.
"OS/2 users will find PhotoSuite for OS/2 an ideal companion for image
editing and management," said Anthony DeChristofaro, president and CEO of MGI
Software. "PhotoSuite can quickly produce thumbnails of any image on a hard
drive or the Internet. And, with our Smart Magic Wand, users can easily edit
and transform their favorite pictures for use in their applications."

The BonusPak Offers Powerful Tools
The BonusPak, which was first available with OS/2 Warp Version 3, includes
nine complete native OS/2 applications. New to the BonusPak is Remote Support
for OS/2 Warp from International Software Solutions. Located in the
Assistance Center, the desktop icon that houses system management and support
features, it allows IBM service representatives to help users directly, much
the way onsite IT administrators do -- by conducting a virtual hands-on
examination of the system. In addition to assisting in problem determination
and resolution, administrators can also transfer files, and download or upload
information remotely, allowing the user to watch their system upgrade without
ever touching the keyboard.
"With the Remote Support for OS/2 Warp tool in the BonusPak, IBM Technical
Support can directly access customer machines to perform help desk and
diagnostic functions," said Tim Guptill, senior vice president, International
Software Solutions. "This is a revolutionary step in providing a level of
customer support as yet unavailable in the general software market."
In addition to Remote Support for OS/2 Warp, the BonusPak will come with
new and updated BonusPak applications. These include IBM Works, HyperACCESS
Lite for OS/2 from Hilgraeve, FaxWorks for OS/2 from Keller Group, CompuServe
Information Manager for OS/2, VideoIN for OS/2, AskPSP, HP JetAdmin from
Hewlett Packard and Markvision for OS/2 from Lexmark.
OS/2 Warp 4
OS/2 Warp 4, previously referred to as Merlin, has gone to manufacturing
and will be generally available later this month. Users can look forward to
the battle-tested engine they are familiar with in OS/2 Warp Version 3, with
an improved user interface and better Internet access, including a free copy
of the new speech-enabled Netscape Navigator** for OS/2. As the ideal client
operating system solution in a networked world, OS/2 Warp 4 will be able to
run in heterogeneous environments with enhanced hardware and software
compatibility, offering users true cross-platform performance. It is the
first PC-based operating system solution to include Sun Microsystems' Java***
technology, as well as built-in speech navigation and dictation, using IBM's
latest VoiceType* technology.
