Need info on Video Camera repair shops

The AutoFocus on my 4 yr old SONY 8 mm video camera seems to be busted. I am trying to figure out if I have any alternative to taking it to the Sony repair center in San Jose, as they want a flat rate of $179. Considering that a new camera with similar features is only about $500, I would really like to be able to get it fixed for a more reasonable price. I would reaaly appreciate any recommendations/ pointers.
