I've had similar experiences down here when shopping for presents on people's
registries at Macy's. I'm in the east, and my friends and family are
considered to be in the west, so when I do finally get help from them (usually
after 15-20 minutes of standing there saying "excuse me..." to every
salesperson who walks by and finally hunting someone down and dragging that
person to the computer), they have real trouble finding the registry in
question. A couple of times they haven't been able to find relatives from
California at all!

Once I did finally get the registry, however, I've had some good experiences
buying things for my friends from other departments.

In quite a few cases now, though, I have ended up calling the mother of the
bride a second time (the first was to find out where the couple was registered)
to ask exactly what the patterns were, then going and ordering them from
Ross-Simons, which discounts their china.

Luckily for us, Macy's wasn't even a real viable option for our registry.....
