Introducing SalaThai London BBS

A new Bulletin Board System (BBS or computer on-line forum) is now
available in the heart of London.

	SalaThai London (call: 0171 - 359 8575 - United Kingdom)

Like its sister BBS in Thailand, SalaThai London covers issues on Asia -
particularly Thailand, but also neighbouring countries and countries in
Southeast Asia. Sala Thai London, however, will particularly target
issues of interest for Thais, other Asians, Brits, Europeans, and other
citizen of this world who are currently not in Thailand/Asia.

SalaThai London thus provides information on what is going on in the UK
(Thai restaurants, Thai community guide, activities, Thai temple fairs,
places to go, things to do, things to know).

Special conference areas can be set up for people who want to discuss
particular issues.

Conferences with limited access can be set up to guarantee privacy.
Contact the administrator if you are interest in managing your own
conference on SalaThai London (this is very easy to do, great fun, and
can be very useful for customer support).

Although initially most of the information of SalaThai will be on
Thailand, Thai language, Thai restaurants, religion, food,
etc............. people interested in other Southeast Asian nations are
very welcome to participate and in fact build their own areas within the
SalaThai London BBS.

Features of SalaThai London:

* Free access for all. Graphic User Interface for Macs and PCs.
* Generous privileges (time and files)
* Many conferences
* Large file areas (information, games, utilities, system software,
fonts)
* Private/Public chat
* Thailand and Asia news (on society, business, culture, politics , &
economics)
* London/UK news (on Asian issues (food, activities, movies, religions,
etc.)

SalaThai London will also provide users the opportunity to send email to
virtually anywhere in the world and use SalaThai London to read their
favourite Usenet news.

Furthermore, SalaThai London will provide Thai language facilities (Thai
language support) to those who have the appropriate fonts/add-ons
installed on their system (for example, Thai Windows or Sahaviriya's
add-on for System 7.5 (or earlier)).

SalaThai London is linked to SalaThai (Bangkok), the most popular BBS in
Thailand. Users of SalaThai London have the opportunity to chat with
people in Thailand for the cost of a local call. Find old friends, new
friends, people who can answer your questions on virtually everything you
want to know about Thailand and the rest of Asia (SalaThai Bangkok is
linked to systems in other Asian countries). SalaThai Bangkok already has
hundreds of users waiting to communicate with you!

Want to advertise on SalaThai London? No problem! For the first three
months everything on SalaThai is free, even advertisements. Just contact
the administrator. Everything can be provided.

Why SalaThai London? In the times of Internet some people may ask this
question. SalaThai and the Internet are very different. The Internet can
be slow, is vast, and often chaotic. SalaThai is fast (we use 28.8 Modems
only, but you can use any modem to connect to SalaThai London), well
managed, and has vast information on Thailand and Asia (Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia, Burma, ....).

SalaThai will provide with Internet email facilities (with your own full
name if you want) and you can read Usenet news. If you want to become a
full Internet user, SalaThai can also help you with that. We have
experience with setting up Internet accounts and can tell you where the
best places on Internet are.

SalaThai London is *now* (15. May 1995) available. Access is free for
all. SalaThai is a non-commercial BBS (but free advertising is allowed
and supported) which depends on voluntary contribution from members. Just
call:

0171 - 359 8575 (BBS number from within the UK)

or + 44 - 171 - 359 8575 (BBS number from outside the UK).

If you cannot get through or want to report a problem, please send a fax
to:

	+ 44 - 171 - 359 8576 (fax only)

The SalaThai London is running 24 hours. Give it a try.

All you need is a modem and a communications program. For best results,
download the First Class Client Software (available for Macs and PCs).
However, a command line interface is available for those using other
computers or DOS-only systems.

Just register when you log-on and fill out your resume. That's it!

I look forward to meeting you on SalaThai London.

Regards (Sawasdee Khrup),

Martin Venzky-Stalling (nickname: Boem), Administrator

Instruction for using the SalaThai London BBS

SalaThai London is a Bulletin Board System (BBS or computer forum) which
you can access with a modem (a computer communication device) and a
communications software package (this often comes with the modem when you
buy it or is included with Windows (Windows Terminal)). We recommend a
fast modem (28.8 V.34) because it saves you money on the long-term.
However, SalaThai works with all kinds of modems, including slower and
old ones.

SalaThai London BBS uses FirstClass Server Software. This is a
particularly easy-to-use software package which provides a Graphic User
Interface (GUI) for Macintosh and PC users (with Windows). However,
anybody can use SalaThai London (with Command Line User Interface (a text
based approach)). For best results, however, you need what is called the
FirstClass Client Software.

This software is available for PC and Macintosh computers. If you do not
have the FirstClass Client Software for your computer system, you can get
it from many Bulletin Board Systems, including of course, SalaThai
London.

You have to log into SalaThai London with your normal communications
software. For best results, you must set the Terminal Simulation Option
to VT100. When you log in for the first time, you will be asked for a
User-ID and a password (you can chose your own User-ID and password).
After that, SalaThai will ask you if you want to register as a new user.
Reply yes, and then fill out the form (real name, address, telephone
number, etc.). Please make an effort to fill this form out. You must fill
in a name and an address! Please also remember your User-Id and password!

Once you have registered as a new user, you will be taken to what is
called your desktop. Your desktop should have at least four icons
(choices): (1) mailbox, (2) news, (3) conferences, and (4) help. You can
start exploring SalaThai now (by selecting any of the four options and
going deeper and deeper into subfolders). However, we recommend that you
take the time to read the help files. For this select option (4). There
you will also see two files: (1) FirstClass client for PCs and (2) the
FirstClass client for Macs. Select one of these two and download the
software to your system. After downloading the software, you can
disconnect.

Now start installing the FirstClass Client Software on you system. Just
put the file into a new folder (directory) and start it (run ...). It
will expand (decompress) automatically. Then start the FC software, which
will install the FirstClass client on your computer. After installation
is complete, double-click on the new icon (FirstClass Client). This will
start the program. You need to select the right modem type, enter your
User-id, your password, and a telephone number. Then you can connect to
SalaThai and enjoy the impressive and easy to use graphic user interface.
Soon you will realise that the bit of work you put into setting up the
FirstClass Client on your computer was worth it!

If you have any problems, check the modem set-up (modem.fcp). We
recommend you to turn all options on. Make sure you have chosen the right
modem port. Only if your problems persist, you may want to play around
with modemspeed, autospeed, and the other options (turn some of them off
). If you still have problems, connect with your normal comms software
and leave a message to the Administrator of SalaThai, or fax, or send
email (Internet or CompuServe). We will do our best to solve your
problems as quickly as possible.

Problem Solving Sheet

To use SalaThai London, there are a number of things that you need to do.
You may read this sheet only if you encounter a problem. Most people find
using SalaThai and the FirstClass Client software very easy to use and
experience no problems.

Other comms software and Command Line User Interface (CLUI)

For best results and ease of use, you need to use the FirstClass Client
Software. This is either included with this introduction package, or can
be downloaded from SalaThai London when logging in with *any*
communications software. If you use other communications software (than
the FirstClass Client), please make sure that you set the terminal option
to VT 100.

Modem does not connect, connections drops unexpectedly, or other problems
Check that you have set the following option correctly:

Telephone number: make sure you have the right telephone number for
SalaThai London: the correct number is: 0171 3598575. If you dial through
a switchboard, put the switching number (for external calls) in front of
the above number (if 9 then 90171 3598575). If your switchboard requires
a short delay, put in a comma after the 9 (9,0171 3598575).

1) Connection Method: Most users will chose the modem.fcp (modem
connection)
If that does not work, try the Communications Tool Box.

2) Pulse or Tone (make sure which one your telephone connections support)

3) Ports (Modem or Printer). Usually modem.

4) Hardware Handshaking - usually turned on
Carrier Detect - usually turned on
    DTR - usually turned on

Note: Turn them off (trying various combinations) if you have a problem,
or if you know that your modem or modem cable does not support the above
functions (some internal modems, old modems, or low speed modems that do
not come with a high-speed cable).

5) Autospeed: usually turned off - even if your modem manual says on. Try
off first!

6) Modemspeed: usually set to highest speed possible, work your way down
*manually* (ie by setting a lower speed yourself , if this does not work
(due to poor lines or other reasons).

PC-users please note that a fast serial port is required for a very
high-speed modem connection (19,200 plus). Check you PC's hardware
features. If you have problems, set the modem speed to a lower speed
(19,200 or lower). This could be particularly necessary if you are using
an older portable computer (laptop or notebook).

Line is busy
Although two lines are available, due to technical limitations, SalaThai
London currently runs on only one telephone line. Therefore please be
patient if the line is busy. If the problem persist, please leave a
message (fax, voice, or email).

SalaThai is your forum and we want to give you the best service possible.
If you experience a problem, think that something is wrong, or have a
query, please contact the Administrator of SalaThai London. Your feedback
is very appreciated.
