An RFD is to be posted soon for a newsgroup for genealogy discussions
among people researching ancestors, family members, or others who have a
genealogical connection to any people in any part of the British Isles,
including the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
The proposal follows a recent re-organization of the soc.roots group
into seven soc.genealogy.* groups, including a set of "ethno-" groups,
some of which were based on existing genealogy mailing lists or groups.
To help prepare for this proposal, would anyone doing genealogy research
in this locale who would be interested in contributing information or
answering general questions in the new group contact me by e-mail at:
galway@chtm.eece.unm.edu (Denis McKeon)
I especially hope to hear from Irish genealogists residing in Ireland -
if you know of anyone like that, please forward this message to them.
This message had been widely cross-posted to groups whose readers are
likely to have an interest in this topic - however, most of those groups
have no chartered interest in genealogy, so please send e-mail responses
to the poster, and direct any news followups to soc.genealogy.computing.
thanks in advance,

Thanks to many people with an interest in online genealogy, I have
received a number of replies and much evidence of support for the
soon-to-be-proposed newsgroup, and several respondents have helped get
genealogists in Ireland involved in the process by suggesting names and
addresses - my thanks to you all.
This message should supersede (cancel) the original request for help.
I am grateful for the help received, but my mail spool file is bulging,
and respondents should not expect a personal response to further e-mail
to me on this topic. If you support the group, please wait until the CFV
appears, probably in January, and respond on the ballot in the CFV.
In the meantime, anyone interested in genealogy of the UK and Ireland is
welcome to discuss genealogy in soc.genealogy.misc.
Anyone interested in following the proposal process for the new group
can watch soc.genealogy.computing or news.groups for discussion, or
news.announce.newgroups for the RFD and CFV. For details, look for
informational messages in news.groups, especially the Usenet Guidelines:
Newsgroups: news.groups,news.announce.newusers,news.answers
Subject: How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup
Subject: Usenet Newsgroup Creation Companion
Once the RFD is posted, the discussion and voting periods will take at
least 6 weeks, and as news.announce.newgroups will be closed for 2 weeks
at the winter holidays, don't expect the group to appear in 1994.
Please Note: This is not a Call for Votes. Do not try to vote now.
Votes can only be cast after the CFV is posted, by sending e-mail
to a neutral vote-taker - please do not send any "vote" messages now -
if you support the group AND have suggestions about it, post to
soc.genealogy.computing or to news.groups after an RFD has been posted.
This message had been widely cross-posted to groups whose readers are
likely to have an interest in this topic - however, most of the groups
have have no chartered interest in genealogy, so please do not post any
news followups until after the RFD has been posted, and then post only
to soc.genealogy.computing or news.groups.
thanks again,
Denis McKeon
