Hello,

I've recently shifted to Zurich for purposes of work. I would
like to have information on the libraries here which have a good English
collection, i.e; books written/translated in English. Kindly tell me how
I can get memberships to such libraries.

I'm specifically looking for early 20th century literature
(novels, memoirs, (auto)biographies, etc) but a little variation would
also suit me well.

If in addition there are private circulation/lending
arrangements I would like to know more about them.

Thanks in advance,

Anirvan.

The two universities have several libraries. Most of them are indexed in
the same catalogue and can be used with the same membership. Membership
and use is free, just bring some form of identification when you first
visit one of the libraries in order to get your card.

The two biggest university libraries are the Zentralbibliothek and the
ETH library. The university has an English department with its own
library as well. You can find links to the online catalogue, locations,
opening times etc. at the ETH library's homepage:

http://www.ethbib.ethz.ch/index_e.html

Note that these libraries are research-oriented. They have a lot of
books, but you already have to know what you are looking for as it
usually is difficult to just browse the books.
