Net Folks,

Please excuse the crossposting, I need to gather a lot of information in a
fairly short period of time.

I am doing some research on sound levels around race tracks, specifically
NASCAR or IndyCar events, though any information would be useful.

Info on severity of traffic congestion around the race track would be
useful also.

Our neighborhood in Oak Cliff, southwest of downtown Dallas, Texas is the
proposed site of a NASCAR/IMSA/SCCA racing facility with a projected
initial maximum attendance of 110,000. Our neighboorhood group is trying
to collect information concerning noise levels and potential levels of
traffic.

My house is less than 1 mile from the proposed track. What should I expect
in the way of noise and spectator traffic?

Have you ever lived in or visited an area where such an event took place?
What was it like?

Pleas include the name/location of the track and any details concerning
the noise or spectator traffic you might find relevant.

Please reply by email.

Thanks in advance,
Tom Karches

A similar issue came up recently near my town of Half Moon Bay, California.
Someone proposed the return of drag racing at the airport as a means
of raising money for the local kids as well as giving them something
to participate in once a month. Drag racing had been common back in the
'50's and 60's.

Knowing that there would be a kneejerk reaction from certain residents, the
organizer conducted a one-day noise test on an eighth-mile track. He
invited drag of all types, from kiddie-racers all the way up to a jet
turbine. Noise monitors were placed at the start of the track and
scattered around the area with the furthest one 3/4 mile or more away.

The result was that, except for the jet engine, the noise was no louder
than your average small plane taking off at the airport. Some people
claimed they heard it while some of their immediate neighbors said boloney,
they couldn't hear a thing. When I walked away from the event the noise
seemed to dissipate very quickly. The few people who live almost on the
airport definately heard it though when you live adjacent to an airport
you do expect to hear some noise.

There was huge, organized protest from the people who lived in the area.
People phoned in 911 emergency calls about the noise even BEFORE the
the cars hit the tracks. The proposal failed, not due to any real problem
but that it didn't mesh with some residents' perceived idea of what the
coastside community is all about. I thought too much fuss was made of it.

In your case, the traffic will probably be a worse problem than the
noise. Are there really going to be 110,000 spectators? This sounds
kind of high but maybe it's true.

It will be kinda noisy but.... It is also kinda fun!

110,000 people is nothing to be real concerned about. Speedway has
500,000 at the race in May. Now thats congested!

I wouldn't be concerned about it because there's virtually no chance that
NASCAR or CART will bless the proposed Staten Island track with a Winston
Cup or Indy race anyway. There are already several tracks nearing
completion which are still begging for sanctions, such as the old Homestead
air base in Florida. NASCAR said that it might add one more race to its
schedule in the midwest but since the northeast only recently won races by
these organzations at Laconia (Loudon), NH it's doubtful that Staten Island
will be much of a priority for them.

For the uninitiated, he's talking (of course) about Speedway Indiana,
home of the Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing!

Wow, I had no idea that they renamed the Charlotte Motor Speedway. That
is, of course, the venue in which the Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing
occurs every year, is it not?
