Is it possible to build a laptop from parts?

Hi, Does anyone out there know whether it's possible to get components to build one's own notebook or laptop computer? I know it's fairly easy for desktop pc clones, but I've not seen ads for laptop components. Does that mean it's difficult to do, or that the parts are just hard to find? The reason I ask is that I've been getting very frustrated in my search for a sturdy, low-end (286, 20 mb drive, mono display) portable machine. It seems no body wants to make them any more, which irritates me, because for my purposes (taking notes in the library) I have no need for 486 speed or a huge hard drive, and I'd really prefer not to pay for them. So, I guess out of spite for the computer makers who seem to want to ignore the low end of the market and force everyone onto the bandwagon of needless speed and expense, I'd like to just build my own, if that is possible. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated! (Please send replies directly to my e-mail address, as I don't check these newsgroups too often.)
