Bechtel International Center and ASHA-Stanford present a
Traditional Indian Dinner this Sunday.

     WHERE :: Bechtel I-Center, Stanford campus.
                  (reply to this message for directions).

     WHEN   ::    6:30pm, Sunday, Jan. 9, 1994.

     TICKET ::    $6 (general), $5 (students)

     WHAT :: A traditional North-Indian meal with several
                  delicious items.

                  Dinner is followed by a movie show. We will show
                  the classic Hindi comedy "ANGOOR", starring
                  Sanjeev Kumar and Moushumi Chatterjee. The movie
                  will be free of charge.

The entire proceeds of the dinner will go towards sponsoring primary
educational projects in India. ASHA-Stanford is a voluntary
organization working to mobilize the local Indian community to support
and provide financial assistance to grass-roots level educational
movements in India. For further information on ASHA please send mail
to asha-info@cs.stanford.edu. To give you an idea, here's a quick
summary of one of ASHA's projects.

ASHA-Stanford is currently funding Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samithi, an
action group of Gandhian Volunteers in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The desert
villages of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer districts suffer from great poverty,
low agricultural productivity, small incomes, and a lack of health
facilities. In addition to all these, the literacy rate is a dismal
10% (almost zero for women). The Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samithi's main
objective is to develop self-reliant village communities. The Samithi
runs a primary school that educates almost 100 girls in the age group
6-14 years in the Jedu Gagadi village.
