"Boys In The Band" Author to Speak at Stanford, April 28
Mart Crowley, author of the controversial play/film 'The Boys in the Band,'
which 25 years ago brought the topic of gay life to mainstream audiences for
the first time, will appear April 28 at a special screening of his film at
Stanford University.
Called "a bible of homosexual manners" by one critic, the play and subsequent
film of 'The Boys in the Band' sparked a debate over what some have called a
stereotypical depiction of gay men. The plot of the comedy/drama centers
around a birthday party and the vicious party game the guests play. Writing
in the New York Times, Walter Kerr praised the play for "permitting us to...
understand a world in which anguish cannot spend itself because it is con-
demned to seeing itself as antic, as not real, as not discussible." The
off-Broadway production ran for 1,001 performances before being made into a
motion picture, starring the original New York cast.
Crowley, whose new play 'For Reasons That Remain Unclear' recently finished
a critically acclaimed premiere at the Olney Theatre near Washington, D.C.,
will answer questions about his work immediately following the screening. The
screening will take place in Room 041 of Jordan Hall (the psychology building)
at Stanford University on Thursday, April 28, and will begin at 7 p.m.
Admission is FREE and open to the public. A reception will follow. For more
information, call the events line of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Community
Center at Stanford (415) 723-1488.
