Actually, it doesn't work like that.  The "beepers" that came with the old
answering machines made special tones that were *only* for that machine.

What you are looking for is a DTMF (aka "Touch-Tone(tm)") tone generator.
You get one of these for $30 or so at Radio Shack.  It fits in your
pocket, and has a regular phone keypad on it.  You just put it over the
handset microphone, and enter your code.
