In May 1981 an Australian ex-Trappist Monk called Laurence Downey took a London bound Aer Lingus flight. Passengers say he was was quite, smoked a cigar, had a brandy and did some reading. Over London, Downey hijacked the plane. He claimed to have doused himself in petrol (later found to be water) and, with a lighter in hand, ordered the pilot to fly to Le Touquet in France where Downey declared his demand: "the pope must reveal the Third Secret of Fatima" Pope John Paul later refused, and after eight hours the plane was stormed by French paratroopers. Downey served a five year prison sentance and was then deported back to Australia. This is a facinating story that I only recently became aware of. I do not remember it getting much publicity in Ireland at the time and I wonder if it was as low key everwhere else. Also what is it about this mystery that mad Downey go to such extremes? How could terrifying innocent pasengers tie into all this? Also will it contain next Wednesday Lotto numbers? -- Tommy (kfuzzbox@tinet.ie)

How could terrifying innocent pasengers tie into all this? Hey Unki. This story did get plenty of coverage on RTE at the time, but the whole episode lasted less than a weekend as I recall. I think I saw a report on the BBC too. The reason the Third Secret has gotten so much attention is that the Vatican originally planned to divulge its contents in 1960, but then reneiged. This piqued curiosity, especially when it was rumored that Pius XII had fainted when he read it. The first secret of Fatima was a vision of hell. The second secret includes the remarks that "millions of people will die from one moment to the next", and that "entire nations will be destroyed". That's more than enough to contemplate IMHO! When pressed, Sr. Lucia remarked that the Third Secret is contained in Chapters 8-13 of the Book of Revelation. Happy reading, Yerman

Get me my bag of "Troll begone" this was reported rather differently in the "Examiner" today. You managed to respond to one of my posts without trying the censor me. For a while there I just thought you were just another casualty of the 1978 Papal Youth Mass in Limerick who was having a hard time coming to terms with being born too late not having the chance to ban books for Dev and Holy Catholic Ireland. Fuck me there's hope yet! -- Tommy (kfuzzbox@tinet.ie)
