Hello! There is a Greece story (myth) about the discovery of magnetism, there a young shepherd, after a one-night sleep in a cave, finds his iron-shoed rod hanging from the ceiling. Who has written it, and where could it be read? Answer to Roy Nilsson - rnn@HGS.se Best wishes!

D.C. Mattis (The Theory of Magnetism) writes: According to Pliny's account the magnet stone was named after its discoverer, the shephard Magnes, "the nails of whose shoes and the tip of whose staff stuck fast in a magnetic field while he pastured his flocks." Mattis refers to Gilbert's (William Gilbert of Colchester, 1544-1603) book De Magnete for the reference to Pliny (first century AD). -- Pieter (kuiper@fysik.uu.se) stuck in the WWWeb at http://usx218.fysik.uu.se/PieterWWW/
