Uranium will not run out by 2050, not even without breeder reactors. You are probably using some old assumptions about the rate of growth of nuclear power and the amount of uranium that had been found. Nuclear power has grown more slowly than anticipated, and lots more uranium has been found. With breeder reactors and using ores whose energy content is more than that of pure coal, there is a billion year supply. Bernard Cohen has made one such calculation, and you can find the reference on my Web page http://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/progress/references.html. Plastics can be made from any source of carbon and hydrogen. If natural gas weren't so convenient, coal and water could be used. The U.S. has an 800 year supply of coal already discovered. Not even Britain will run out of its own coal by 2050. Are they all crackpot doomsters in the Centre for Environmental Chemistry, BRUNEL University? -- John McCarthy, Computer Science Department, Stanford, CA 94305 * He who refuses to do arithmetic is doomed to talk nonsense. http://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/progress/
