Big business and industrialization are more importanat, to the government, than human lives. I grew up in Pittsburgh, near the steel mill plants, in the '50s. We would wake up in the morning, and, all too often, there would be a "red ash" covering things. (the steel mills appeared to save thier worst pollution expulsions for the night - when less people would see it) Our mothers would have to gauge the wind, before they hung out clothes to dry. The red dust actually etched car paint and metal. It is blatantly obvious that it was not good for people - shoirt term or long term. When we fought the pollution, what we got back was the rhetoric that it would cost the corporations money, and people would lose thier jobs. Even back then, I thought that "if your job demands that you piss on my head - then you DAMANED well better get another job! If you profit demands that you piss on my head, then DAMN your profit! As it turned out (as some people had predicted) Whenb "government regulations (you know ... those demon things the repulicans hate) forced the industires to clean up .... more jobs and a whole new industry were created in anti-pollution products. The steel mills, for many reasons - none of which had to do with pollution or pollution controls, ended up leaving for foreign shores anyway.
