Read Robert Caro's Power Broker for a good understanding of how
the American obsession with the automobile wrecked New York City
for nearly fifty years-- and made it a model for the destruction
of the urban lifestyle in most other US cities.  The trouble
with cars is that they isolate the passengeres from their
environment.  Fundamentally, they're a force for alienation and
self-absorption.  Moreover, the underclass tends to suffer the
most from the car problem.  Check out any neighborhood in
America that's had a freeway built through it for easy transit
by white suburban commuters and understand the definition
of "blight."
