Correct me if I'm wrong (And it's been a long time since I've taken High
School Chemistry, so I may well be) but doesn't diesel exhaust consist
almost entirely of C2 (Carbon Dust), rather than CO (Carbon Monoxide) and
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) as emitted by conventional cars?  Granted, the carbon
smoke LOOKS much worse (Heck, it's solid... isn't that a colloidal
suspension or something?), but it all falls to the ground eventually
(There goes the colloidal suspension theory) and ends up buried, where it
eventually gets broken up and used in some other way (Perhaps mixing with
enough O2 and H2 to make sugar and feed a tree, or something).  CO and
CO2, however: CO2 is the "Greenhouse Gas", and CO is the Destroyer of
Ozone (3CO + O3 --> 3CO2)

(As a further aside, (And to plagarize Yogi Berra), 90% of [this] is half
mental.)
