In article <boyce-250194131843@sofa.gsfc.nasa.gov> boyce@lheavx.gsfc.nasa.gov (Kevin R. Check last year's annual index in > Science News if you want to check the reference. I think soot and ozone > are the worst offenders. Interesting, I did not see that. But I have a hard time believing that the soot inhaled by people from diesels causes any where near as many problems as the asthma/respiratory problems caused by smog which is (invisibly) suspected to be the contributer to a large number of deaths and serious health problems. I would think that the soot would settle out fairly quickly and be a localized problem whereas smog is a long range phenomenon. The sulphur and nitrogen oxides produced by gas engines are also *major* contributers to acid rain, kind of the ultimate long range phenomenon. At any rate, relatively inexpensive technology has been developed to remove soot and may become available soon. I certainly would not want to minimize the detrimental effects of diesel engines on the environment and people's health. I just wish to correct the mistaken assumption many people make that diesels are *worse* than gas engines because of the obvious soot emissions. The full story is *much* more complicated and may very well be the other way around. -- eric ogata@tethys.nswc.navy.mil
