Some consulted, no doubt some didn't.
One Senator, in his second reading speech, told of how he had personally
telephoned every person who wrote on the issue who gave a phone number.
He even went beyond this, tracking down others using the telephone directory.
When you tar all Senators with the same brush you smear conscientious
Senators like this along with the slackers.

I can tell you from my own lobbying that there were excellent Senators
on both sides of the issue, and on all sides of politics. I have a file
full of letters from Senators who care about this issue.

Each and every Senator recieved several thousand letters on this issue.
Over 90% of the letters condemned euthanasia. In my own experience when
media reported public opinion polls say one thing, and my mailbox fills
up with letters saying another, I tend to believe my own eyes.

Probably because only a minority of the population really give enough
of a stuff about the issue to get off their butts and do something
about it, and only a tiny fraction of those who care support euthanasia.

IMO most Australians don't even know what euthanasia really is, or care.
