A quote from David Cundiff MD, Hospice Physician in "On Pain and
Living - Chapter 8,  Myths About Cancer Pain"

"Recent research demonstrates that opioids can be used for years to
relieve severe pain from cancer. There is no reason to avoid strong
opioids for severe pain at any point in a cancer patient's illness. I
currently follow three cancer patients who have been on opioids for
more than five years with good pain control."
