Maybe we could organize a weekend > transfer with james to get the thing... jonk (Jon Kirwan) was supposed to be contacting one or another of the Jolitz's about getting a copy. I would prefer to make copies on QIC-24/DC-600 tape of a lot of this stuff rather than spend days downloading it. Consider: 4 megabytes/hour is a pretty good transfer rate over most modems or SLIP links. A 60MB tape would take 15 hours to download. Or a few minutes to back up to tape. I've been thinking about doing something like this: making tapes of BSD, GNU (probably take at least two tapes), news (Cnews, nn, rn, trn, etc.), games (five, six tapes?), etc. You pick up a tape here at the store and are supposed to return it in a few days. If you don't bring it back, there's no charge, you just can't pick up another tape until you bring the first one back. Somebody could lug them to SLUG meetings, too. This is based on used DC600 tapes being available relatively cheaply, as in under $5/each. That may be a wrong assumption ... I pick DC600 for two reasons: it's what I've got, and most 125MB/250MB drives are supposed to be able to read (though not write) it. I figure the maintenance wouldn't be too bad once the first tapes were made: copy them to a work area, move new files into it, then make a couple of copies of that directory to tape. Anyway, I've been meaning to post something about this to one of the pdx.* groups to see if other people would be interested. I know of half a dozen people here who'd like to get BSD386. And some folks that'd like to get all of GNU, etc. So if people are interested, holler, and maybe we can get some of the nitty gritty details worked out.
