Thunderstorm Phobia !!!

Hi All,

I have a strange (as to my friends) phobia for thunderstorms and the
associated lightning. Whenever I get to know that there's going to be a
thunderstorm in our vicinity, I start feeling nervous, but my friends and even
my wife take everything very lightly. What I feel is that the lightning would
come into the wirings of my apartment house and jump on me. I watch the
weather bulletins religiously and I remember during last summer I did not
sleep for the entire night when I heard a loud clap of thunder at about 1
a.m. as if it was next to my house. Strangely enough, I am more scared of
lightning than tornadoes. If, somebody could assure me that if one could stay
away from telephones, unplug the tv and cable, stay away from electrical
outlets (he/she is fairly safe enough from indoor lightning, I could get some
peaceful sleep. I am already worried about the oncoming spring weather due to
the same. Pls advice or suggest something.

Thanks

Shekhoo

Personally, as a lightning and thunder expert, I think you're right to be
worried. In fact, I think one day soon that lightning is going to come into
your apartment and jump all over you. It'll tease you at first, and then,
growing tired of the game, it will incinerate you like an ounce of hamburger
in a microwave on high for an hour.

Or, maybe not. But, just to be on the safe side, why not move to some place
that never has thunderstorms!

Ah yes other people do, wives especially...but show them a mouse or a
spider and the're on the table screaming in no time.

Well you have a house insurance policy...just unplug what you can (Not
the freezer!)

Take an interest in them, learn how they work, measure the rainfall from
them. Read about them, get aquainted with them.
Do not avoid them.
However lightning will always strike at the highest point...if your in
the sea then it's your head. If you are out in the open leg it to a car
(which is totally safe) - not a tree!!
But honestly study them, make notes on their movement, measure the size
of the hail, learn how they form.
You are almost completely safe in a house unless you hold the TV ariel
in your teeth.
Lots of people have this phobia, just learn to expose yourself a bit
more to them by learning and observing.
And please report what you see back to this newsgroup, we need reports
of movenent, estimated gusts, hail size and all that. So please come
back with some reports.
Cheers
Paul

I also am terrified of thundershowers and all aspects of them and I'm an amateur
meteorologist!

By the way are you a sikh?

More likely probably someone wanting to see what kind of responses
are made. If this really concerns you, then you should educate
yourself about lightning & see that it isn't the big bad wolf you
imagine it to be. It's dangerous though.

Although I generally agree with Paul's post, I suggest you don't do
all the things he suggests unless weather interests you. We don't
need to add another meteorologists to the list of those who became
one because of some frightening experience. A person should study
this because they love it or it fascinates them - or if they have
nothing better to do - or all of the above :)

Of if (s)he inherently has necessary skills to do it excellently.
This is true for some people for many things even if they don't
like it & would rather be doing something else...

I'll try to determine exactly where the scattered showers might
occur tonight 7 tomorrow near S 'New England' if I 'get around
to it' :)
