Not being from around here, but only married in, I know little but hearsay of ramps. I didn't even know how to spot them in the woods till last spring, and wasn't sure till now (if I am -- quite -- even yet). And, having had umpteen bazillion times my fill of it in the Eastern Rockies when young and defenseless, I'd rather die than hear any more country western, ever again. Sorry about that (but not very). What it means is that I stay away -- far away -- from for instance the annual Ramp Festival in Cosby, Tn. Thanks to the generosity of a fine electronic friend, however, and the expertise of an Appalachian Trail forum, I now have two little patches of what are definitely ramps (not lily of the valley, which surround them!) up in our fully wooded yard. (We have *no* grass. <huge grin> Plenty of bloodroot, but no grass.) So what do I do with them? How much can I harvest, and keep the patches increasing? Can I use the leaves, while they're still young & tender, as I could onion and garlic greens, or even part of the greens of cultivated leeks? Details, details, ever more precise details! Pretty please! I tasted a bite of leaf yesterday, and these things are in a class with leeks and saffron! -- Beartooth Implacable, curmudgeonly codger learning linux No one can ever have enough books, pockets, friends, knives, guns, garlic, workspace, or mountains.
