DARE to Keep Reminding Kids to Constantly Think About Drugs and Alcohol

After one of my high school presentations about writing, a group of excited
students ran up to me and said, That was incredible! And we are so glad it
wasnt another assembly about drugs. We had three of them in the last five
weeks. After the last one, we smoked pot... we are so sick of that crap.

Most principals are unlikely to take that drug education money and spend it
on a bunch of assemblies all at once because they are likely to be hip to
the game of using that money in more creative ways. These days, if they
need a new backboard for the basketball court, they will write up a proposal
that playing basketball builds self-esteem and then they can legally use
drug education money for that sport. The hyphenated catchword self-esteem
is the most commonly overused term thrown into many programs and events in
order to bring forth some of that federal cash. If a bad magician pulls a
rabbit out of the hat and says something about the rabbit having
self-esteem, then that program qualifies for federal drug education money.
On my website I have listed links to about a thousand other websites of
those who make appearances in schools and on most of those websites there is
some mention of dealing with issues of self-esteem or drug avoidance. But,
come on, how much relevance to drug avoidance can there really be in
watching puppets, folk singers, clowns, bicycle and unicycle stunts,
skateboard artists, storytellers, authors, string quartets, jugglers, and
guys who go around wearing unitards painted with images of their inner
organs?

As a father and someone who is known for being able to emotionally engage
large groups of students with my own presentation, I am sick of the drug
education nonsense as well. Imagine being in any business where your
competitors can offer their services for free (paid for by a third party)
but you cant. So you constantly witness inferior presentations with less
emphatic reviews being able to charge higher fees and get more work and
travel fewer miles for that work.

About ten years ago an inner-city school said they had heard great things
about my program but the only money they had to spend was drug education
money. Could I come to their school and just once ...
