It would seem that many people have missed the point. Usenet is composed of areas of discussion. In an ideal world, those areas will generally be following a common theme. When I read a forum on accounting I don't expect to read messages on gardening. This is not a limit on free speech. You are quite welcome to talk about gardening for as long as you like, but please do it in the forum where that discussion is most likely to be welcome. The same applies here, is it _really_ so hard for people to 'self moderate' their own actions? Obviously a series of posts here have met with the ire of a group of people who have been 'forced' to read posts for which they have no interest in a forum where the posts are not relevant and do not follow the general 'theme' for that forum. Now here we are telling those who are irate about it that they are somehow limiting another person's freedom of speech because the single person cannot (or chooses not to) moderate their own behaviour in light of evidence of obvious ire at their inappropriate actions. Sorry, I really don't see that as preventing someone from 'having their say' - just asking them to 'have their say' in the appropriate place. There's a time and a place for everything. If I go down to my local court house and start making speeches from the gallery are my rights to freedom of speech being unjustly curtailed if I am ejected and permitted to continue making my statements on the footpath outside? Or have I just been moved to a more appropriate place to exercise my right? That latter I suspect. I see the same thing here despite what some people seem to think. -- |~~~~~~~~~~| dfreeman@icecave.apana.org.au | -= The Ice Cave =- | | _--_|\ |---------------------------------------------------------+ | / *\ | Longreach (Population 3500) | FIDONet: 3:640/535 | | \_.--._/ | | AmigaNet: 41:450/533 | | v | Stockman's Hall of Fame Country | Phone: No Dial-Up | |__________|_________________________________| Connections |
