Rich,
Does this mean that if I spam over and over, then I should not have my
account pulled? After all, all the rules of netiquette are "arbitrary." The
whole purpose of the 'net is to get information out to people who want to
read it, and to engage in "meaningful" discussion. The problem with Bob
(and I only know him from these postings, so it's a limited opinion) is
that he is sending to newsgroups where the people don't want to hear his
message, and are not the proper forum for his work. I have no problem with
his poetry (although I find it a bit too "modern" for me taste), just his
method of propagating it.

(pronounced JOY !!) > Bruce Yes it is sad, because it confirms the fears of many of us that internet is dominated (and controlled it would seem) by that tiresome kind of person who is so often found around computers: the control freak. As Terry Morrissey pointed out (though he wasn't defending Bob) in his response to the gentleman who complained about stolen time, most of the space on these threads is taken up by people bitching about Allisat's alledged abuses. There seems to be this element that has a deep spiritual need to point out and enforce the rules of so called netiquette. Considering that these customs were established when USENET was dominated by computer professionals and university students/faculty, is it surprising that they are challenged now that other members of society (hopefully) post messages? As for abuse, what is appropriate for a group called placename.general? Surely whoever creates a group with general in its name has to expect posts on a variety of subjects in a variety of formats (Personally I think verse is the superior form for USENET and email communication - concise, compact etc., but I'm too lazy to try to write that way). Here, for all of you who so love to appeal to a higher authority (now, isn't this tiresome?) is the Oxford English Dictionary definition for 'general'. general-completely or almost universal; including or affecting all or nearly all parts or cases or things; not partial, particular, local, or sectional. In my area we get Bob's stuff under ns.general. Now, anyone who has walked the countryside of Nova Scotia ought to agree that this province is very much about poetry, if you take my meaning. Of course, looked at this way, I can understand the complaint about posting poetry to tor.general. Happy Camping Mike Small

Anytime a business person or organization kicks up a fuss about the extra time consumed by having Bob as a customer, it's a control issue. Maybe you should have a good long read over his litany of posts. Better yet, give old Bob an account on your system and see how much fun it is! If anyone has a control issue, it's the rabble around here who think that an independent business can't stop business relations with a client who is an incremental liability -- because of a non-existant motivation of "censorship". > > In my area we get Bob's stuff under ns.general. Of course, > looked at this way, I can understand the complaint about posting > poetry to tor.general. > (Pathetic Toronto slag ignored.) The issue with Bob is not his poetry, much of which is quite fun. It's his shit-in-the-sandbox attitude. If you look at his remarks, you'll see it quite quickly. His disregard for others when it comes to his own underdeveloped and incomplete agenda is the source of the fuss.

Of course, >looked at this way, I can understand the complaint about posting >poetry to tor.general. Actually, <x>.general is meant for *informational* postings that apply to the geographical area <x>. These newsgroups were probably misnamed....they should have been <x>.info. The custom is there, the literal name is just skewed. The whole thing is very silly, anyway, because if Bob really wanted people to read his stuff, he'd post it where it is wanted. Since (almost) no one wants it here, and (almost) no one reads it, one can only assume that Bob enjoys irritating others. Daniel Zappala daniel@isi.edu

But I notice you never responded to the article's point that 'general' means (in my words) 'pretty much everything.' Is this because you don't have a valid point ot make regarding that? Trevor

Good for the FreeNet crowd!

I deem *that* appropriate.

When faced with persistant and reasonable argument, they resort to crude epithet and vulgar outbursts in the hope that they can silence the opposition. This is not free discussion. Exactly, freedom of the press, for those that control the printing press. These same people cheering now will complain the loudest (and likely in an unintelligable fashion per usual) when their freedoms are curtailed (likely) in the near future.
