Restaurant near Toronto G/L Film Fest? (College/Euclid)

This year I decided to splurge and buy tickets to a whole dozen shows at
the 1996 Toronto Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. This means I'll be spending
_a lot_ of time at the Metropolitan Cinema (previously the Euclid), at
Euclid and College.

But what's a hungry filmgoer to do? I'm unfamiliar with the area. I'm
sure y'all have a favorite restaurant or two over there, don't you?
Thanks.

Anyone else ever been to Sotto Voce? It's right in the area there. When
I was last there, the food was reasonable and good and the wine selection
was amazing if you were into Italian wines. Kai.

Nothing startling in that area. LOTS of ethnic (Mex, Korean, Indian,
Hungarian). Pubs: the Clinton at Clinton and Bloor, the celebrated
Brunswick house at Brunswick and Bloor. Haute Cuisine on Markham Street,
the street Honest Ed built. Fashionable places for the young crowd
(students?) on Bloor between Bathurst and Spadina. Some way south on
College is Little Italy, where you can try the curious ritual of a San
Francesco meatball sandwich carried into the Monarch House pub. (But
never on Sunday).

This part of toen is currently booming right now. There are many restaurants
Since moving into the area 2 years ago, over 20 eating and drinking
establishments have poppped up with more on the way. There are mostly
Italian ones with my favourite about 5 minutes west, Grappa. Grappa is
definitely a cut above your average pasta place. You get complimentary olives
to start, oil and vinegar for your bread (butter on request), refills on
espresso and cappucino and no plain spaghetti and tomato sauce entrees.
The most aesthetically pleasing place is Kalendar just around the corner
from the theatre which has recently expanded. For a quick pesto slice go to
John's Pizzeria.

What was wrong with Tasca? I have always had great food and service at Tasca.
I go there quite often.

He is not asking about Bloor Street. That is too far away.

There is a lot more to little Italy than San Francesco's. It is very happening
right now. You might be surprised if you go there.

As I continue to defend my neighbourhood and correct any innaccuracies:
I have been there. It is a nicely decorated little wine bar but primarily a
wine bar. The food they have is good but they don't really have entrees
per say. They have sandwiches and a pasta of the day.
If you just want drinks are a small bite it's great but not if
you want a three course meal.

I have to agree; a friend and I went on a whim, and were hard-pressed to
choose from the menu once we got there. We ended up making a meal out of
appetizers, which can be a fun, if a touch expensive, way to eat out. For
the record, I tasted her pollenta and swore I'd be back to Sotto Voce,
for a portion of my own this time.

If you want Italian Sandwiches, go to California Sandwiches, on
Claremont Street (just north of Dundas). The best sandwiches in the
entire city!!!

Try Sottovoce @ College and Clinton-ish. Great grub.

One of my favourite restaurants in the city is Chiado's at College &
Ossington - Portuguese style seafood.
