Formation of Toronto Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN)
<URL:http://www.interlog.com/~dekoning/torspin/>
Toronto, Ontario (April 21, 1997):
Leaders of the Greater Toronto Area software development community
have organized a local Software Process Improvement Network (Toronto
SPIN). The purpose of this network of professionals is to share
information and experiences in the rapidly growing field of software
development and support. Communications among members will depend
heavily on the latest Internet vehicles, and a WEB site is being
established.
Toronto SPIN adopts the organization model of other SPINs, and shares
the objectives of the Ottawa SPIN and Montreal SPIN. SPINs worldwide
are allied to the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Melon
University in the US where much of the early process assessment work
was done, and where the CMM model for software process improvements
was developed.
The intent of the Toronto SPIN chapter is to create a series of
discussion Forums to exchange software engineering ideas, expertise,
and experiences. It intends to promote improvement of practices,
increase process maturity levels, and raise the quality of software
products in the Toronto area through an active program in partnership
with other groups and associations.
Membership in the Toronto SPIN is open to all, and the group is
undertaking fund raising to support a series of programs to be held
throughout the year. Southern Ontario is a nucleus for Canadian
software, and Toronto SPIN hopes to play a role in the growth and
success of this industry and its stakeholders. This industry within
the GTA represents a significant part of the IT industry in Canada and
the Toronto SPIN's vision is to make this area a centre of excellence
for software development.
There will be a launch meeting on June 5, 1997 at the Central
Reference Library Conference Room, Elizabeth Beeton Auditorium, 789
Yonge Street, (1 block North of Bloor St.), from 1-4 PM. For further
information or to register for this meeting, see the SPIN's website
at http://www.interlog.com/~dekoning/torspin/.
