Hi Larry

Defamatory statements( i.e. libel and slander) may carry criminal
sanctions in Canada.

Libel is a criminal offense per sections 296-316 of the Criminal Code
which deal with "Blasphemous Libel", "Defamatory Libel", liability for
publication of such libel and defences to such a charge.  Similarly the
Criminal Code contains provisions concerning "Seditious Libel" at
sections 59-61.  Another category of defamation under the Criminal Code
is offences dealing with "Hate Propaganda" and "Advocating Genocide" at
sections 318-319.
