In the old days, you typically married someone you knew since childhood. Heck, I've known my wife since kindergarten. Her dad owned the lumber yard, and my dad was one of his best customers. I suspect strongly that if a study was done on divorce, that it would show a correlation between the length of time a couple knew each other prior to marriage and marital success. The longer "courtship" period gives both people time to recognize the plusses and minuses of the other, their beliefs and how they react to different situations. If I were in charge of the world, I would require that couples live together for at least three years before being permitted to marry AND that they live as married people for another three before being permitted to have offspring.
