I pretty much live on the road, working for a local TV station. We've
adopted the phrase "Amoco Buffet" to describe our usual dinner option,
which is to cruise the local gas station/quickie mart ("stop and rob")
and try to create yet another permutation of drink and starch. And in the
leaner times (which seem to keep on happening) those 2/$1.00 hot dogs
have sustained me for weeks on end. Now, for you true believers, there
are places that also sell BBQ and (for those on hot dog budgets) those
potato wedges for about a buck per pound. Major belly bombers; you could
stuff yourself and drive at the same time, which is one of the primary
definitions of true road food. The downside of some of the local places
is the lack of Hostess products. I'm sure there are plenty of Little
Debbie disciples, but I gotta have Hostess. And Yoo-Hoo. So while I don't
really mourn the lack of 7-11's, I do have a mental list of local places
around the state that have Ho-Ho's, potato wedges, and West End sodas
available for my snacking pleasure at 3am. THAT's the true measure of any
civilization.

Besides, it's sorta neat to see another humanoid up at 0-dark-thirty in
Toadsuck Ferry, NC, besides yourself.

regards,
Victoria
