This will be the last Library and Networking videoconference
this
fall.

The speaker is Dr. Paul Solomon, Asst. Professor at the School
of
Information and Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill.

The topic for this session is an overview of human-computer
interface
design for online information systems. Dr. Solomon will give us
background on the subject and some details about the work he has
done.

The importance of human-computer interface design increases as
the
number and diversity of new users of online information systems
and
sources grows daily. These users require software tools that
will
help, not hinder, their necessary work.

Networked information discovery and retrieval (NIDR)
applications on
the Internet such as WAIS, the Internet Gopher, archie, and
WorldWide
Web have emerged to serve a user community seeking access to
distributed, multiform infobases as well as bibliographic OPACS
(online pubic access catalogs). Developers of these
applications and
succeeding generations of NIDR tools need to consider interface
design
as well as functionality issues in order to deliver efficacious
products.
