Proposed UDP against BellSouth & WebUseNet

Anyone know what the status is on this??

I've noticed a real dropoff in the last few days in a number of text
groups that I follow. I was wondering if this had gone into effect.

There was a passive UDP by Supernews only from June 20th and 21st. Since
then there has been no other UDP activity. Supernews began accepting
arctiles again the 21st or 22nd.
Thanks,
Stephen

Me too. I'm at a disadvantage here because I don't speak Initial.

From Jargon File (4.3.0, 30 APR 2001) [jargon]:

  UDP /U-D-P/ v.,n. [Usenet] Abbreviation for {Usenet Death Penalty}.
Common (probably now more so than the full form), and frequently verbed.
     Compare {IDP}.

Usenet Death Penalty.

What I understood is that BellSouth supposedly allows "open proxies"
(not sure exactly what that is) and SPAMMERS can hijack them to use
BellSouth's access into WUN to flood newsgroups with SPAM.

The other news server companies are pissed at WUN & BellSouth because
they don't appear to be doing anything to stop it.

The Usenet Death Penalty would mean that nothing from BellSouth and
WUN would be accepted by other servers, meaning that you could post,
but your post would only be seen by people whose news server accepted
posts from BellSouth & WUN.

On BellSouth we would still see all the messages from the other
servers, but anyone not on BellSouth & WUN would be unable to see our
posts.

At least, that's the way I understand it.

Usenet Death Penalty. When other Usenet providers get together (or
act alone in some cases) and refuse to propagate posts from the
offending provider. If a full UDP was issued against WUN, then the
posts from WUN's subscribers would only show on WUN's servers and
would not be propagated to other providers.

Usually there is a chain of events. The offending provider is warned,
and then given a certain amount of time to clean up their act. If
they don't then the UDP can be initiated. It is up to each provider
to decide whether or not to participate.

And a proposal to do just that to BellSouth & WUN was forwarded to
bellsouth.net.support.news-service around the middle of June.

I believe the original proposal was posted in
news.admin.net-abuse.policy.

I just wanted to find out if there was any further information,
particularly if they were planning to go ahead with it?

Well, BS, get your shit together and stop allowing open
proxies to the news servers.
